While the page is loading, you may see this message for a short time. If it persists for more than a few seconds, there may be a problem. Here are a few things to check:

Navigating this Website

How to list all available pages, navigate between them, zoom on images, expand sections, see tooltips and follow links.

Buttons

Watch for control buttons—gray squares with an icon, such as those shown below. Tapping or clicking on them will trigger an action. The button will briefly spin while the server processes your request.

Control Buttons

When you tap the screen, move the mouse, or scroll a page, control buttons should show up in the lower left corner of the display.

Change Font Size Tap these buttons to view the Table of Contents, to go to the next or previous pages, view settings and QR codes, or obtain help.

Hiding Control Buttons

The control buttons can be hidden by tapping the crossed-out eye button. Once hidden, a single button with an eye icon will remain in the lower left corner. Tap on that button to restore the full set of controls. The full set of buttons will always appear if you scroll to the bottom of the page.

Table of Contents

The Table of Contents (ToC) page lists all of the pages on this website. You can view the ToC by tapping on the control button which shows up at the bottom of most other pages.

To see all available web pages, click on the Expand ToC button at the bottom of the page. The Collapse ToC button will show only the highest level pages.

Individual sections can be expanded or collapsed using the small buttons with triangle icons. You can also click on the left-half part of the section's name.

To jump to a page listed in the ToC, click on it's name. If the page happens to also head a section, you will need to click on the right-half of the name, or simply click on the small button to the right of the name with two chain links in it.

Figures and Math

Many images and mathematical expressions are initially displayed in low resolution. Using your browser's normal zoom function makes the image larger, but it will remain low resolution. To view a high resolution image, tap on the image or mathematical expression.

This will open a high resolution image in a dedicated window. This new window will have different control buttons from a typical web page.

You can use the conventional methods to zoom and pan the image in this new window (pinch-zoom, scroll-wheel-zoom, click-and-drag, etc.)

The buttons on this page will let you zoom in, zoom out, reset the zoom level, close the window, and get information on the copyright license for the image.

The control buttons will fade away after a few seconds of inactivity. Simply tap the screen or move the mouse to make the buttons visible again.

Expandable Sections

Some pages contain expandable sections that reveal additional details, such as computer code or detailed graphs. These sections appear as follows:

Small buttons in the top-right corner of each section allow you to expand or collapse it. If the section contains computer code, additional buttons may be available to download the code as a file or copy it to your clipboard.

Preferences / QR Code

Typical pages include a control button with an icon resembling a QR code. Clicking this button opens a settings page similar to the one shown below.

This page allows you to adjust the font size, copy the web address (URL) to your clipboard, open your email program to contact the page's author, or reset all settings to their default values.

The following information is stored locally in your browser while you browse these pages. None of this data is transmitted to the web server or any other device. No cookies are created, or sent to any web servers.

  • Open and closed folders in the Table of Contents
  • Last scroll position on each page
  • Open and closed collapsible sections
  • Most recently viewed page, highlighted in the Table of Contents
  • Most recently viewed tab on pages with tabbed content
Links and Tooltips

Links to other web pages appear as dark blue text with a solid underline, like this. Click or tap on this highlighted text to activate the link.

Tooltips provide additional information in small pop-up windows. They are indicated by light blue with a dotted underline, like this. Hover your mouse, tap, or click the text to open the pop-up. To close it, tap or click anywhere outside the window.
